Safety.. Safety.. Safety

Safety is our primary focus during our matches. Yes we like to have fun, yes we like to a good time with our friends and yes we want to spent time in the Bullet Hole looking at new items we can take home and put in the safe. But our main focus during the match has to be safety, especially when we are handling firearms in the classroom or on the range. Sometimes we think safety just happens and we don’t have to think about it. This can happen to ANYONE.

I have been shooting competitively since 1983 and consider myself a safe shooter. This past match I was disqualified for a safety violation. It was deserved, and actually I DQ’d myself as soon as the incident happened. I knew it was wrong and I had made a mistake. I am not making any excuses for what happened. For just a moment I forgot where my primary focus was suppose to be, and a problem occurred. Those folks behind me looking down the barrel of the shotgun we were using, didn’t care that it didn’t have any shells in it. I’m sure some were ducking as the barrel started to come around as I was trying to sling the shotgun and transition to my pistol.

We can’t afford an accident. We all need to remember to focus on safety, and not let our guard down. Especially us old-timers!!

Results have been posted, but the stage descriptions may not be done yet. Stay Safe!
