02/14/2008: "Ramblings from the President"
We had a good turnout at the last match. Hope everyone that wanted to, got a chance to shoot Doug’s BUG match. We try to have at least one BUG stage a year and Doug’s match is always well received. It’s good to shoot some of those guns we don’t shoot often, but may have them with us when we are out and about.
The scoring this month was done a little different from normal. I scored it as three matches; Tommy’s stage, Doug’s BUG match, and the third was Doug’s match for those not using a BUG gun. One issue that continues to come up when the scoring is completed is the division the competitor is shooting in. It has to be marked on your score sheet in order to be scored correctly, otherwise you are scored as UNKNOWN. If you are new to IDPA and aren’t sure or don’t know which division your gun puts you in, then make sure you ask one of the board members.
I will be holding an IDPA safety officer certification course on Saturday March 1. It is an all day class and you must be a member of IDPA. If interested please let me know as soon as possible. I can be contacted at jphewins@yahoo.com. The class will be held at Camp Naish Boy Scout Reservation located in KCK. Cost will be $20.
Classifications are earned by shooting the IDPA Classifier course. The classification course is a 90 round, 3 stage match. It emphasizes a number of basic skills that we all should possess, including weak hand shooting, strong hand shooting, shooting on the move, reloading, shooting from cover, and shooting from a distance. If you need further info on the course you can go to http://www.idpa.com/classify.asp and get additional information. It takes about 20 minutes to shoot and doesn’t lend itself to being part of a monthly match. We try to set it up after our Saturday matches when we get requests for it. If you need to shoot the classifier you can contact a member of the board. You have to be a IDPA member to have a classification.
Why would you need a classification?? If you go to any sanctioned matches you will need to be a member of IDPA and have a classification. There will be two sanctioned matches in Missouri in June of this year as well as one in Arkansas and one in Oklahoma. If you are interested in the Missouri state match, here is a website you can access and get the info. http://www.benchrestidpa.com/missouristatematch.htm
